Expansion of Government What is Necessary - 1816 Words
Is there a limit to how much control the government can have over citizens? When the United States was founded, it was constructed to ââ¬Å"restrain men from injuring one another, and otherwise leaving them free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread they earned,â⬠but as time passes they have began to become more involved in issues that do not serve the well being of the people. Today, problems economically and socially flood the nation leaving the government in disarray. Before one can determine the limits of government, one must define the role the government has and what it is responsible for. The answer is simple considering the system in which power is obtained in the United States. Politicians are granted power by winning elections which are determined by receiving a majority of the peopleââ¬â¢s votes. The process in which people have been made a part of the government actions through voting is clearly necessary in any form of a democracy. Problems occur when people vote others into power for reasons other than the ability that politician has to be successful in managing the country. Media has made politicians less known for what they can do to help our countries needs at the moment, and more about the polit iciansââ¬â¢ stance on controversial topics that involve individualsââ¬â¢ religious beliefs or suit oneââ¬â¢s lifestyle. What guidelines should the government be following to insure they are involved in only necessary conflicts? First, they must question whether there is a source of market failure. If there is, they must ask if there is evidence that the market actually would fail. They must then question whether the government can realistically make an impact that would result in a solution to the problem. Finally, they must ask if there is evidence that the benefit from the action that was taken outweighs the costs.
